No Single Entrance Exam for Engineering in 2018

The ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has indicated that it is not going to pursue a single entrance exam for engineering in 2018.  Next year, the states and other institutions are free to hold their own entrance exams for engineering seats.  The committee set up by the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) initially had proposed having the single engineering entrance exam in 2018 but now this decision has been postponed for sometime in the future.

One of the key issues for postponing the single entrance exam decision has been because nearly 50% of the 15 lac engineering seats across the country are unfilled due to lack of demand.  In the case of medical admissions, there is limited supply of seats.  Therefore, a streamlined single entrance test like NEET has its benefits.  However, in case of engineering seats, the seat supply is much more than the demand.
